iv. As part of the study trial process, I directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that a team of experts, security agencies and other stakeholders fully participate in the trial process and my office also invited these agencies to participate in the trial; and

v. The trial process has been concluded and the study and reporting process is currently ongoing.

I wish to thank the general public for reaching out to us on this issue. We advise you all to remain rest assured that government will always take the welfare, health and security of the public into account while considering the deployment of any technology.

Prison Break: Warders reportedly kill 8 inmates

Warders reportedly kill 8 inmates linked to Kaduna prison break attempt

The last may not have been heard about the attempted prison break by inmates of the Kaduna Correctional Centre, as reports say about eight of the inmates believed to be arrowheads of the attempt may have been killed.

It would be recalled that inmates at the centre had embarked on a protest that later turned violent over concerns that they may contract the dreaded COVID-19 disease that is sweeping across the world, because of the over crowding and lack of proper ventilation at the correctional centre.

Though the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) said one inmate died while officers were trying to quell the riot, sources say eight people were moored down.

The names of those said to have been deliberately killed by warders at the centre were given as Hammed Abdullahi, Lucky Ugokama, Ibrahim Abukabar, aka Baba Lolo, Yahu Salisu, Elvis Wisdom Adekpe, Lucky Njoku, Oluchukwu Oche, also known as ‘No Witch’, and Ibrahim Abdullahi, while Ogume Osifo Osarome is said to be in critical condition after being severely tortured.

According to sources, they were killed because they are believed to have spearheaded the protest the inmates embarked upon to demand for their safety.

The sources also disclosed that on April 1, a day after the unrest, prison waders went round cells and ordered those believed to have spearheaded the protest to come out.

One of the sources said: “One Hammed Abdullahi was shot in the stomach by a prison guard, he died immediately.

“Yahu Salisu was shot in the buttocks while Ibrahim Abdullahi died of torture.

“Lucky Njoku was beaten to death by prison guards, he died of the wounds inflicted on him.

“Ibrahim Abubakar died yesterday too from the beatings he received from the prison guards.”

There are however efforts, according to sources, by Management of the Kaduna Correctional Centre to cover up the killings.

The spokesman of the centre, Muhammad Jalige, while responding to enquiries over the reports, insisted that the matter was “an internal problem between staff and inmates of the correctional facility”.

World Bank excludes Nigeria from its $1.9bn COVID-19 response fund

Nigeria’s indebtedness to World Bank hits N3.6tn

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors excluded Nigeria from the list of 25 countries that will benefit from its $1.9 billion first set of emergency support operations for nations that had been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision, the World Bank said in a statement, was reached by the board on Thursday and it was prepared to deploy about $160 billion in the next 15 months to help countries deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and quick economic recovery.

The statement read:

“The World Bank Group is prepared to deploy up to $160 billion over the next 15 months to support COVID-19 measures that will help countries respond to immediate health consequences of the pandemic and bolster economic recovery.

“The broader economic program will aim to shorten the time to recovery, create conditions for growth, support small and medium enterprises, and help protect the poor and vulnerable. There will be a strong poverty focus in these operations, with an emphasis on policy-based financing, and protecting the poorest households and the environment.”

Also, the bank’s president, David Malpass, said the group was taking broad and fast action to reduce the spread of COVID-19 across the world.

He said: World Bank Group is taking broad, fast action to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and we already have health response operations moving forward in over 65 countries.

“We are working to strengthen developing nations’ ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and shorten the time to economic and social recovery. The poorest and most vulnerable countries will likely be hit the hardest, and our teams around the world remain focused on country-level and regional solutions to address the ongoing crisis.”

Sadiya Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, says the ministry has commenced cash transfer to poorest households in the country to cushion effect of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Because of this COVID-19, the vulnerable groups have to expanded, because we are aware that there are people who live on daily wage, so we are also going to look at those groups of people to see how we can get this food relief intervention to them in this period.”

Court refuses to hear Bayo Dayo’s application for Injunction

During the Court proceedings,  the lead Counsel  for PDP Chief Chris Uche, SAN,  informed the Court of his client’s application to transfer the matter to Abuja to be consolidated with the matter which was already instituted in the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The Counsel to Engr. Bayo Dayo confirmed service of the application filed by the lead Counsel for PDP but pleaded with the Court to allow more time to study the application.
INEC lawyer who was also in court informed the Court of their papers which they have also filed in respect to the matter.

Can we say APC is sinking earlier than expected, PDP gaining momentum?

The road to 2023 is getting increasingly interesting with each passing day if the ongoing brouhaha in the ruling party is anything to go by. With different factions representing different interests within the ruling party, the coast seems clearer for the opposition party, the PDP who barely lost the unfair and incredible election, according to several international observers. Although there has been various speculations about a former two term Governor of Lagos State and a national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu taking over from Buhari, the mere thought of the possibilities has led to high level bickering even amongst his kinsmen from the southwest. From the pan yoruba sociocultural group, Afenifere to the executive power blocs in Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, a divided Ogun, and even a marginalised Lagos, analysts believe that asides from an impending massive rejection by the ndigbo and Niger-Deltans, an out of space rigging system will have to be in place for a Tinubu to be President. In what effectively represents a survey, a social media commentator from Ogun State, Wasiu Ademola Sobowale on the morning of Tuesday, 17th March, 2020 delved into a topic in a bid to generate public opinion on the 2023 subject. “Should PDP reconsider Atiku/Obi joint ticket in 2023, Tinubu/Sanusi may become inevitable.
Support your preference with SENSE!”. The result as at the time of writing this report is a whooping 100% in favour of an Atiku/Obi ticket. The reasons are not far fetched. With the Lagos landlord believed to be the most greedy capitalist from the west with insignificant achievements after supervising Lagos state for 21 years, the grand theft occurring within the same period, including the light rail yet to be commissioned 11years after a humongous sum of 550billion naira has been made available, to make mention of only a few of the heists allegedly supervised by the bourdillion emperor. However, one achievement that cannot be taken for granted is the making of several executives across the southwest at different times, although it has been argued that it is for some selfish and inordinate ambition, the reality of this position seems to be settling in in gradually. Whether or not H.E Atiku will be recontesting, the Pan Nigerian seems favoured than ever before. The fact that the goodwill Buhari enjoyed in 2015 has been long eroded, and in addition to the fact that the current number one citizen is on a final lap leaves the North for Atiku for a near 100% grab against a Tinubu. The results of the 2019 election shows that H.E Atiku will easily get the required two-thirds from the Southwest and an Obi in the equation makes the Southeast a sure bet. The South-South is predominantly PDP, and thus most likely settled on that note.
The road to 2023 is likely to be short and intriguing. More so, several analysts are of the opinion that it will become increasingly easier to predict as the days go by.   Furthermore, if it took a unified APC widespread rigging and electoral malpractices and doctored court rulings to remain in power, how unpopular is the idea of a Tinubu 2023 and how less likely will the sinking and divided brand deliver across board?
