COVID-19: NHRC condemns alleged inhuman treatment Nigerians face in China

The Positive & Negative Sides Of Coronavirus (COVID-19) In Nigeria

Mr Tony Ojukwu Executive Secretary of NHRC in a statement in Abuja stated , that the commission noted with concern the alleged inhuman treatment.

He said that the information at their disposal indicated that Nigerians and other African nationals have been singled out for forced quarantine despite undergoing an initial 14-day quarantine.

“Reports of ejection of some Nigerians from their homes and hotels by the Chinese authorities are clearly acts of discrimination and a gross violation of human rights.

” The Commission also notes with concern the reports of seizure of international passports belonging to Nigerians.

” This was not only a violation of international human rights norms but one that is capable of rendering Nigerians stateless in a time of global emergency when nations are evacuating their nationals to safety.

‘ The alleged maltreatment of Nigerians during an outbreak of the COVID-19 global pandemic when nations of the world are coalescing in unprecedented acts of solidarity and commitments should be condemned in all its forms” he said.

The Commission called on the Federal Government to take immediate steps in reaching out to the Chinese Government.

“There should be a stop to the harassment of Nigerians, Africans and indeed any citizen of the world in the guise of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

” In particular, we urge the Government of Nigeria to take all necessary steps to evacuate Nigerians willing to come home from China and other countries where they are currently at risk of discrimination or any form of racial abuse as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak” he said.

He also commended the immediate actions already taken by the Nigerian Mission in China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Femi Gbajabiamila.

Ojukwu stated that the Commission  will continue to monitor the human rights situation of Nigerians during and after the COVID-19 response.

He  also called on the public to report  any human rights violations, via call, text or WhatsApp  to NHRC hotlines: 08037875427, 08179371339, 08034354537, 07033398657.

Robberies: Ogun Government On Top Of Situation, Effects Arrests

The attention of the Ogun State Government has been drawn to incidences of violence, alleged robberies and related crimes resurfacing in the State, especially in the Sango-Ifo axis. The Government had earlier seen to the arrest of some suspects, as carried out by the Police, is in connection with the chain of unrest in the affected localities.

The State Government wishes to reiterate its commitment to the security of lives and property.
We wish to assure the entire citizenry of adequate security and our dedication to safety of the people, and we urged everyone not to panic, as the situation is under control.

Stop Depicting The Military As Brutal In Your Drama Skits – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has warned movie and skits producers to stop giving the public negative impression about Nigerian Army. The Nigerian Army through a press release signed by the  Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa warned skit makers, the press release read thus:
1. There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a variety of measures to stem its spread in our country. Some of these measures include restriction of movement, lockdown and stay at home directives which are being enforced by various government and security agencies. Some creative Nigerians found it expedient to provide comic relief through the production of funny jokes, graphics, drama skits and video clips to entertain the public. The materials are circulated through social media.
2. Unfortunately, most of these clips circulating on social media bordered on the Nigerian soldier and projecting the military as lawless, brutal and being harsh on people flouting the stay at home order pursuant to the lockdown and stay at home directives imposed in some states in Nigeria. There is no doubt these drama skits and video clips denigrate and cast the military and the security forces in a bad light.
3. This development creates a wrong impression and general perception of our soldiers negatively and projects them as undisciplined and brutal. Thus, creating an erroneous impression of the military. We are well trained and dedicated professionals that perform our Constitutional duties diligently and dispassionately with utmost regards for human rights and rules of engagement.
4. It is wrong to continue to produce such drama skits, video clips and graphics at the expense of the excellent image of the Nigerian soldier. It affects troops morale and has a broad implication for national security. No nation or good citizen make jest of its military. Therefore, we are appealing to well-meaning Nigerians and producers of such materials to desist forthwith. The military or security agencies should not be made the subject or focus of those skits at the expense of a key and strategic arm of the security architecture of our great nation.

5. On our part, we will continue to discharge our Constitutionally assigned tasks professionally respecting human rights and rules of engagement. We will also investigate the source of such props and costumes and ensure that military uniforms will not be used to denigrate the military.

COVID19: NOW IS THE RIGHT TIME – Tunde Dawood-Akerele (a Lagos based novelist, poet and publisher)

Now, here in Nigeria, what we are witnessing can be best described as a celebration of a season of shame, as expected, no reasonable measures or steps are being taken by those in power to cushion the inherent hardship of social restriction order caused by Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the whole world. Due to shortage or absence of relief packages, thieves are back in every street operating freely, people are complaining of hunger while living is getting tougher for the less privileged at the time our leaders are becoming richer. Many Nigerians could not afford to eke out their means of livelihood despite the fact that they go out everyday let alone now that they are restricted for 14 days without any provision. What do we expect those men who don’t have saving, poor artisans,, petty traders  poor labourers , indigent, beggars to feed on during this restriction period? Social Restriction Order is not odd but adversely hazardous in any place where adequate provisions are not made the government. Hunger is flogging Nigerians but those in position of authority are not aware of that as they lead direct opposite life to the poor – never lack any means of survival.
In other nations where citizen welfare is well valued, to their citizens feeding is even easier at this difficult time unlike here where government eloquently pronounce Social  Restriction Order, extend restrictions without making any adequate provision for the masses.
This is the first time I write criticaly about President Buhari’s attitude and his administration. Even when millions of Nigerians were calling him names such as Baba Goes Low during his tenure I refused to join them. Now, I’m left with no other option than to share my candid opinion of him and his government.
In so many areas, PMB has not succeeded in doing things better than his predecessors. Even there are many areas of the economy  where some past military and civilian heads of state had performed far better than him. Either correct or not, we had population census during the military rules that gave at least rough estimate of our population that still helps government in some ways. The Buhari’s administration never considers it good to have or improve on existing database. The federal office of statistics can never give a rough estimate of male, female, adults, working class, dependants, Muslims, Christians, etc.
Now that COVID 19 draws everyone’s attention to this silent and salient issue, the Buhari’s administration finds it so difficult to know how many billions of naira can provide relief stimulus for the poor Nigerians for 14 days restriction period while sharing modality is another source of headache peradventure they think of it.
Some states have received billions of naira as palliative from the federal government and philanthropists. Less than 1% Nigeria population had received cash reliefs while the rationale for sharing such is not yet clear to many of us. The 1% are from some states in North.
It’s disheartening to hear and read that many state governments had released billions of naira to provide food relief to the masses while those food items are yet to be found or shared. To many state governors, COVID 19 pandemic is a blessing not only in disguise but also in the open to corner a lot of money. Some governors here in the Southwest boastfully declared that they have made  provisions for food reliefs that can take care of 50% population of their citizens while a week into restriction only one loaf of bread per house, one pack of noodles for a whole street while larger area have not sighted those  items.
Those politicians who could afford to lavish oodles amount of money on radio jingles, TV adverts, billboards, branded vans, different sizes of posters, give out a quality T-shirt, cap, wrist band, yards of Ankara, flash drive, foodstuff and cash to each electorate during the  electioneering campaign now find it difficult to share a bag of rice among ten households and dole out cash as they characteristically do both the primary and general elections.
Likewise, those politicians who electoral fortunes failed to smile at are not left out. Sharing and identifying with the masses should not be limited to campaign time. Just because they failed to emerge, they have suspended sharing time till campaign days. That’s odd.
Many ex political office holders are richer than the incumbent courtesy of billions of naira they successfully diverted while in power but they are of the opinion that they are less concerned about people problems so far they are no longer in power therefore every responsibility lies soley on the incumbent. That’s why almost all the past political office holders decline to make any reasonable contribution towards relieving masses of feeding challenge at this hard time.
Many contractors get more money than those in power but instead of aiding and relieving  the masses in form of Community Social Responsibility at this critical time of restriction they rather pretend as if they run those juicy contracts at loss. It is so shameful that they can travel around the world in private jets  but never deem it fit to assist their friends and relations at this trying time.
It sounds somehow ungodly to hear that many religious leaders have devised different means of taking or extorting their members during this difficult moment. A man of God who can afford to feed the church/mosque conveniently during this period is still warning his members of negative implications of not remitting offerings and tithe.
Now is the right time to learn some lessons. Now is the right time to do critical evaluation of PMB’s administration in terms of attending to real people’s oriented projects, people’s welfare, people’s health and security. Imagine the current state of many of our general hospitals and how many new ones this administration has successfully put in place. Government and governance is not limited to fighting corruption and railway construction.
Now is the right time for those political mercenaries, touts and women leaders to understand that they only waste their precious time and conceited efforts in winning elections for this set of politicians who have no single plan for them as an individual or a group.
Now is the right time for every Muslim and Christian to apply their commonsense instead of following or observing their leader’s detectives dogmatically particularly when it comes to issue of money.

Our Challenges And What We Can Do As Nigerians? – By ‘Yanju Uwala

Today, I will be speaking on two different issues, which is of course are battling our political ideologies as an individual and as a country, our inability to reflect on these ideologies as been making us fail yet we believe we are succeeding in our political endeavours. Don’t we think we going to get alongside well in this country of ours soon? If we think so, what are the lines of thought we are thinking along to achieve this?
We do complain and express sadness over actions and inactions of our government, yet we are same persons who follow them all about, we do their biddings, we are like slaves to them and we don’t think of of our tomorrow whenever we are with them. What is the reason for this? What do call for this? These incidents do happen in almost all states, and yet we do not hesitate to recall our thinking faculty of what will happen to us later even after these people leaves the seat.
I can recall, a situation when a taxi-cab driver was boasting for supporting a former governor who contested for a senatorial position, saying he gave him N100,000 for their prayers, now when asked what he did with the money, he said he used for the completion of his house. Many of people like this abound in our society, in our states and that is why we are not moving forward in this country. Tell me, how can we, when we keep on selling our future to the present incident?
Secondly, these same people we keep backing are once, twice or thrice senators, governors, honourable, speakers, and throughout their tenure during this period, nothing tangible can be said they achieved for their state or locality they represent, yet they will come out during another election period and you will also throw support for them…are they the only persons in the society contesting the election or what makes them more valuable than others?
What is the reason behind this, maybe I can be convinced better. When shall we think out of our closet, these our political actors have turned the political positions to their own and personal home-space, and for the reasons, they deem it fit to give it to anyone who they like, be it their family members or accomplices and as a result, they decide what comes in and out of the position; so what do we achieve as citizen at end of the day?
Yet, our country has not been getting along well to the democratic principles, we are not doing we in it at all. We abuse every previleges that comes with it. But the fact remains that we don’t know what we want. The issue now is that what do we want, the only thing is that we, people who are supposed to decide what we want are not doing this at all, and this is what our political leaders knew that they now decided to keep at bay making to suffer, and offering us the unexpected, and we will fall for it.
Haven’t we think that whenever there is a need for election, they call on the people to vote them, this is because the people are the power and because of this, we also have the power to also demand what we want from the government, but unfortunately we have lost this purpose.
Can we get this purpose back, and if yes, how soon?

COVID-19: Ogun Deploys Mobile App for residents’ personal Self-Assessment

The Ogun State Government has rolled out a mobile application for members of the public to self-assess themselves on individual basis for the dreaded Coronavirus.
The State Government had in March launched a real time concurrently updated mobile application for health workers which has been deployed to all government and private health facilities across its 20 local government areas to aid information sharing.
In a release signed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, the new application, christened, “Ogun COVID-19 Assessment” is not for diagnostic purpose but it is meant to determine the risk of resident’s exposure to the disease.
Coker noted that the application is downloadable on Google play store and can also be assessed on https://covid19.ogunhip.com/ and
She said that responses are monitored on a dashboard at the  Ministry of Health which will flag high risk individuals as red who are promptly followed up by the State Epidemiologist.
“ This Mobile Application is an assessment tool for the individual members of the public on the basic symptoms of Coronavirus. It can be downloaded on Google play store. The App is not for diagnostic purpose.
“ Responses are monitored  on a dashboard at the Ministry of Health which will flag high risk individuals as red who are promptly followed up by the State Epidemiologist,” the Commissioner said.
Urging members of the public to take advantage of the mobile application,  Coker assured that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led government in the State is putting measures in place to contain the disease.

Beware of COVID-19 Cyber-attacks and Fraud – CBN warns Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wishes to alert the general public that cyber-criminals are taking advantage of the current “COVID-19” pandemic to defraud citizens, steal sensitive information, or gain unauthorized access to computers or mobile devices using various techniques.

This trend is not peculiar to Nigeria as there has been a rise in COVID-19-related cyber criminal activities all over the world. Our priority is to ensure that Nigerian banking customers are aware of the ongoing trend to prevent them from falling victim to such cybercrimes.

Some of the cyber-criminal activities using the COVID-19 pandemic are outlined below:

Phishing campaigns: cyber-criminals send out emails claiming to be from health organizations such as the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) or the World Health Organization (WHO). The email may contain a link which, if clicked, steals login credentials or other confidential information from the victim’s computer or mobile device.

Relief Packages: Cyber-criminals have also been sending messages via social media or emails asking people to click on links to register in order to get their COVID-19 relief packages from the Government or other organisations. They simply use this to get confidential information from unwary victims. Relief package scams also come in the form of phone calls asking people to provide their banking details to receive relief packages.

A sample is as seen below:

Impersonation: Cyber-criminals place calls to individuals claiming to be staff of their banks and asking them to get mobile apps that would help them get through this pandemic period.

Such mobile apps are however used to steal information from the victims’ mobile phones among other things. Criminals have also produced COVID-19 maps, which steal i informationin the background.

To ensure that bank customers and citizens do not fall victim to these cyber-crimes,please observe the following precautions:

i. Beware of and verify emails or phone calls claiming to be from NCDC, WHO or

Government, especially when such emails request your banking information or to click on a link. Visit official websites of relevant organizations for desired information;

ii. Avoid clicking on links or attachments in emails that claim to have more information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic;

iii. Avoid downloading mobile apps from untrusted sources; and

iv. Obtain relief package or other information from trusted news media.

While we work to keep safe physically and prevent further spread of the virus, members of the public should endeavor to apply caution in order to beat not just the COVID-19 Virus but also the cyber-criminals seeking to take advantage of its spread for nefarious acts.

The Central Bank of Nigeria will continue to monitor and investigate these activities and provide updates as they occur.

COVID-19: UK, US record deadliest days of pandemic

Both the United Kingdom and the United States have recorded their deadliest days of the coronavirus pandemic so far.
In the UK, another 708 deaths were reported on Saturday as people were told to stay inside despite warm, sunny weather.
The total number of deaths recorded in Britain is now 4353, with more than 41,000 cases confirmed across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The youngest victim announced on Saturday was just five years old, according to NHS England.
The child is now believed to be the youngest coronavirus death in Europe after a 12-year-old girl passed away in Belgium earlier this week.
Britain’s death toll has been steadily increasing at more than 500 deaths a day this week and the country is bracing for an expected peak in the next week to 10 days.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is in self-isolation after developing mild symptoms of the disease, ordered a three-week lockdown of the country on March 23 to try to cut infections.
But there has been concern that warmer weather forecast for this weekend could tempt people from their homes to green spaces and public parks.
“I just urge you not to do that,” Johnson said in a video message on Friday.
“Please, please stick with the guidance now.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock also warned against any relaxation in social distancing. “If we do, people will die,” he told a daily briefing on the government’s response on Friday.
In the US, more than 1000 people died in just one day, raising its total death toll to 8000. More than 30,000 new cases were also confirmed for the first time, pushing its total number of infections above 290,000, according to John Hopkins University.
The United States has the most confirmed coronavirus cases of any country in the world – more than double the rate of Italy, who has the second most cases.
Everyone in the United States is now being urged to wear homemade cloth masks to prevent coronavirus cases from skyrocketing further.
